Stewardship is increasingly becoming a focus in construction projects. Organizations, stakeholders, and communities want to see spaces that are built with our planet and people in mind.
Sustainable building is not only about caring for the planet or delivering renewable energy facilities that power our communities; it’s also an intentional, values-driven approach that guides everything from design and material selection to protecting the environment surrounding the project site.
For some partners, this may be reimagining an existing space. For others, it may mean building an adaptable facility that can serve organizational needs for the future.
With the right partners and a focused approach, organizations can deliver spaces that meet their project goals while caring for the environment.
Living a commitment to stewardship and responsible construction practices extends across all project aspects, including budget management, schedule coordination, and protection of people.
Partners that value construction project stewardship and make it a part of their culture bring a holistic project approach, delivering spaces consciously and with care. It should never be an afterthought; rather, the right partners automatically make it a part of the project process.
This ensures the planet is cared for, financial resources are managed responsibly, schedules are met, and people are protected.
Responsible construction practices protect our planet and communities where we build.
In some communities, this means delivering utility-scale solar projects that provide clean energy.
From waste-reduction and recycling project materials to energy reduction and performance tracking, partners can also take actionable steps in construction resource management to care for the environment.
Furthermore, the right partner will be committed to meeting construction project sustainability goals, such as LEED or Green Globes Certification, or integrating rooftop solar arrays.
For example, when building the Titan Readiness Center, Boyd Jones collaborated closely with the owner and project partners to meet LEED Gold certification. This delivered a space that kept the planet in mind long after project completion.
Financial stewardship shows up in many ways, from upholding budgets through cost control in construction to identifying ways to include wish list items without impacting the overall project cost. Creative scheduling strategies, strategic phasing, early bid packages, and more all drive value.
Transparency at every step is at the core of responsible financial stewardship.
The Liberty First Credit Union Arena (formerly Ralston Arena) project began as a single-tenant facility for the Omaha Lancers junior ice hockey team. However, the scope transformed throughout construction to accommodate a diverse range of events. We worked closely with the City of Ralston to adjust the scope while meeting the City’s budget goals. Dedicated stewardship of public funds delivered a space that today is a cornerstone of many community events, including sports games, concerts, comedy shows, trade expos, and more.
Strategic scheduling that proactively anticipates potential challenges and adapts to the unexpected is key to responsible construction schedule management.
Beginning with preconstruction planning, this includes anticipating long lead times, issuing early bid packages as needed, sourcing and securing a qualified workforce through recruitment efforts, strategic phasing, and, if needed, carefully adjusting sequencing to keep completion on time.
The Waterford Building was constructed during a period when market volatility had the potential to significantly impact material and workforce availability and, in turn, schedule. Boyd Jones worked closely with the owner to mitigate delays by prioritizing specific scopes and adjusting the schedule through three-week lookaheads. This strategic construction project management approach delivered the space on time despite unpredictable market conditions.
Stewardship also means being a good neighbor in the places we build, protecting our people through community-focused construction.
Clear separation from active construction activities, transparent communication about the project, and an active effort to minimize disruption on and around project sites are all hallmarks of community stewardship.
As we built the Against the Current Career Academy addition to UmonHon Nation Public Schools, Boyd Jones ensured the elevations would match the existing building and located exterior mechanical utilities to keep the school operational during construction. Close communication with school administrators, weekly updates on site activities, and dedicated signage, separation, fencing, and temporary partitions integrated the new portion into the existing school while minimizing disruptions.
At Boyd Jones, stewardship is one of our core values, guiding how we show up in our projects. However, it’s also so much more. It’s a commitment to build with care for our planet and our communities. It’s a responsibility we hold close to carefully manage the resources entrusted to us.
