When the City of Seward decided to invest in renewable energy, Boyd Jones and Bluestem Energy Solutions stepped in to provide the city of about 7,000 with a renewable energy resource connected directly to its distribution system. The City of Seward keeps 95% of the environmental attributes (Renewable Energy Certificates or REC’s) from this facility in order to deliver this amount of renewable energy generated from the facility to their customers, and sells the remaining REC’s to lower rates for their customers.
The distribution-connected model means that all electricity generated by the turbine is being used locally. With a generating capacity of 1.7 megawatts, the GE turbine is capable of powering about 600 homes.
Bluestem owns and operates the turbine. Boyd Jones served as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for the project.
