Located near Central Community College in Hastings, NE, Boyd Jones realized a 1.7 MW GE wind turbine with a tower height of 80 meters that serves a dual role as part of the campus’s wind energy curriculum and a renewable source of electricity.

Boyd Jones joined hands with Central Community College, Bluestem Energy Solutions, and a local electric utility to deliver this project. Bluestem Energy Solutions is a developer, owner, and operator of renewable energy resources headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. The company identifies, develops, and implements local energy solutions for utilities across the Midwest, helping communities transition to cleaner, more resilient power generation. Our work together on this project emphasizes the power of innovation and continued collaboration to power communities.

Serving as EPC, Boyd Jones ensured the turbine is interconnected directly into the Hastings Utilities subtransmission system. All electricity is used within the utility’s own distribution network. At peak generation, the turbine is capable of meeting the entire Central Community College campus load.

This transformative project helped lift Central Community College into the ranks of The Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges: 2021 Edition, serving as a model for the innovative ways campuses are “going green” across the country.
